Background of the Study
Intergenerational conflict, stemming from divergent values and lifestyles between older and younger generations, has become a pressing issue in Oredo. Rapid social changes, modernization, and evolving cultural norms contribute to tension and misunderstandings between generations (Ifeanyi, 2023). Youth in particular are caught between traditional expectations and modern aspirations, resulting in psychological stress, identity confusion, and feelings of alienation (Chukwuemeka, 2024). Research suggests that unresolved intergenerational conflicts can adversely affect mental health, leading to increased rates of anxiety, depression, and behavioral problems (Uche, 2025). This study investigates the dynamics of intergenerational conflict and its psychological repercussions on youth. By examining the sources and manifestations of these conflicts, the research aims to identify strategies for mitigating their adverse effects and promoting harmonious intergenerational relationships that support healthy youth development.
Statement of the Problem
Youth in Oredo face significant psychological challenges due to intergenerational conflict. Discrepancies between traditional cultural values and modern lifestyles create tensions that impact their emotional and psychological well-being. These conflicts often result in stress, reduced self-esteem, and behavioral issues. Despite the evident negative impact on youth, there is limited research on the mechanisms through which intergenerational conflicts affect mental health in Oredo. This study aims to fill this gap by systematically investigating the psychological effects of intergenerational conflict on youth (Ifeanyi, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To investigate the nature and extent of intergenerational conflict.
To assess the psychological impact of these conflicts on youth.
To propose strategies for mitigating conflict and promoting mental well-being.
Research Questions:
What are the primary causes of intergenerational conflict in Oredo?
How do these conflicts affect the mental health of youth?
What interventions can reduce intergenerational tensions?
Research Hypotheses:
Intergenerational conflict significantly increases psychological stress among youth.
Discrepancies in cultural values correlate with higher rates of youth anxiety.
Conflict resolution strategies improve mental well-being.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the psychological impact of intergenerational conflict on youth, offering insights for developing interventions that promote mental well-being and harmonious relationships. The findings will be valuable for community leaders, educators, and policymakers in Oredo (Chukwuemeka, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to exploring intergenerational conflict and its psychological impact on youth in Oredo Local Government Area, focusing exclusively on intergenerational dynamics.
